Happy Dogs Legacy arrives in Nelson

Nelson Fire & Rescue Service was recently visited by Jean Shaw, a representative from Happy Dogs Legacy. The Legacy team delivered three kits containing three different sizes of pet masks in each kit.
The masks, customized to fit on pet’s faces, help provide lifesaving oxygen to resuscitate animals that have been overcome by smoke.
The pet masks are shaped so they fit over the nose and mouth of a pet, be it a cat, bunny, dog or bird, so that it creates a sufficient seal to receive the oxygen it needs.
The Happy Dogs Legacy and this campaign were started as a result of a fire at the Burnaby home of respected dog trainer, Dove Cresswell that claimed the lives of seven dogs and two cats. Only two animals in the home survived – they were the only two that received oxygen at the scene.
On their website, http://www.happydogslegacy.com they say, “If we are successful, we will know that something positive will come from all of this — pets across the province will have access to lifesaving equipment that can hopefully increase survival rates of pets that are overcome by smoke.”
Fire Chief Len MacCharles states, “Nelson Fire & Rescue Service is proud to receive these pet oxygen mask kits, which will allow our crews to further help our citizens with important members of their families – their pets!”
