Nelson is about to get a taste of a live orchestra performance when the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra performs at the L.V. Rogers Secondary School Gymnasium (Friday) May 6.

The evening, beginning at 7:30 p.m., also features the Trafalgar and LVR Concert bands playing with the GVYO.

“This is an important fund-raising opportunity for the LVR and Trafalgar Bands,” a spokesperson said.

The Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra wraps up its 30th Anniversary Season with a concert in Victoria before heading out on tour to the Southern Interior, with stops in Nelson, Kimberley and Fort Langley.

The GVYO will also perform concerts for school children in Langley, Rock Creek, Kaslo and Kimberley.

The GVYO will hold workshops with student music ensembles in Langley and Nelson, and the ensembles will join the GVYO in performance.

The host community benefits from all concert proceeds, not to mention great music. The student musicians have the chance to make music with a full symphony orchestra, partnered and mentored by their peers.  As for the GVYO players, their musical outlook is enriched by repeated performances of repertoire in a variety of collaborative situations.  And they experience first hand the wild beauty of southern BC, and the warmth of its people.

Along with some sparkling orchestral gems, the GVYO tour program features a new work commissioned by the orchestra in honour of 30 years of music-making.

Composed by GVYO alumnus Brandon Chow, the symphonic poem draws its inspiration from the Nuu-chah-nulth canoe, Tilikum, which made its perilous Victoria-to-London voyage in 1909.

The Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra – expressive, exuberant, focused, adventurous – is respected as one of the finest youth ensembles in the country. Its members come from throughout southern Vancouver Island to prepare and perform masterworks of the symphonic repertoire, thrilling audiences and critics alike.

Tickets, available at Otters Books, Eddy Music, LVR High School or from Band Members, are priced so that families can come and hear these talented young adults.
