Fred Rosenberg: the Radio Photographs at the Nelson Public Library

Nelson photographer Fred Rosenberg took thousands of photos during Kootenay Co-op Radio’s first ten years of broadcasting—16,000 photos in all. KCR is displaying a selection at the Nelson Public Library during September and October, with a new selection of prints October 1.
Rich black and white mages of radio shows, radio plays and live music, radio camps and special events, building renovations, and even the Annual General Meeting radio bingo are all part of the exhibition. Many of KCRs movers-and-shakers, radio personalities, and dedicated volunteers have been caught in Rosenberg’s lens.
Fred Rosenberg received his Bachelor of Arts in photojournalism from San Jose State University in 1969, and began exhibiting his photographs in 1971. He was a street photographer for two decades in California and Vancouver and has photographed in a variety of contexts in Nelson since 1982, including as a studio/portrait photographer. Fred was a dedicated Kootenay Co-op Radio volunteer and board member for many years, and continues to document the activities of this dynamic community resource.
Kootenay Co-op Radio (KCR) is a volunteer-led co-operative community radio station that works to entertain and inform listeners and to reflect the varied perspectives of West Kootenay communities. Incorporated in 1998, KCR now broadcasts to a population of 25,000 via four repeater transmitters located in Nelson, New Denver, Crawford Bay and the lower Slocan Valley. Since the station’s inception, 1,000 volunteers have produced 500 radio series on diverse topics.
