'Directly Affected: Pipeline Under Pressure' film to screen in Nelson

The West Kootenay EcoSociety and Civic Theatre are bringing the movie Directly Affected: Pipeline Under Pressure to the big screen Monday, June 11.
In an era of climate change talk and fossil fuel subsidies, Directly Affected: Pipeline Under Pressure is a poignant and timely documentary that records the impact of the Kinder Morgan Transmountain pipeline expansion.
Ranging from scenes of the Burnaby Mountain protests, to Indigenous communities in Northern Alberta living with oil extraction, to New Brunswick where many tarsands workers live, to the Paris Climate talks, Directly Affected shows the national consequences of the oil & gas industry, and offers a microphone to those ignored by the failed National Energy Board review process.
With the recent announcement by the Federal Government that all Canadians are now ‘purchasers’ of this project, there is no better time to find out what our public funds are paying for.
“We talk a lot about jobs and the potential marine impact on the West coast,” said Erin Thompson, Community Engagement Coordinator with the West Kootenay EcoSociety, “but I think we’re missing a key part of the conversation, which is the global implications of this decision.
“The tarsands expansion included in this pipeline deal would account for 16% of the world’s carbon budget if we want to keep global average temperature increase below 1.5°C – and as Canadians we only represent 0.5% of the world’s population. We view ourselves as a kind, considerate, peace-loving nation, but we’re essentially raging climate war against the world.”
Proceeds will be split between film Director Zack Embree and the West Kootenay EcoSociety.
