Once again the Civic Theatre is sponsoring locally crafted beer commercials for local craft breweries.

The results, along with a collection of your favorite brews, will be served up at the Second Annual Craft Brews of the Columbia Basin Film Competition gala screening in Nelson on October 10, 2019.

The Civic is currently accepting applications from regional film makers who have until October 1 to submit their short film.

“The energy level of audiences enjoying big screen cinema premieres of local creative talent making fun grassroots commercials for local watering holes is contagious and hugely fun,” said Jason Asbell, Civic Theatre‘s Programming Director.

The competition was inspired by the longstanding Big Rock Brewery Film Festival but with two goals – support for the growing Kootenay brewing industry and as a development initiative for The Nelson Civic Theatre Society’s, Kootenay Screen Based Industry program.

With support from East and West Kootenay craft breweries, CBCB offers a low-pressure prompt for both emerging and professional filmmakers to practice their craft with full creative control. They also have a chance to walk away with cash prizes ranging from $750 – $1,750 for the top three films. For regional tourism and the sponsoring breweries the festival provides wide exposure and a unique promotional video.

The criteria is to create, an up to three-minute ‘outside of the box’ beer commercial or short film featuring one of the ten participating Columbia Basin craft breweries. Nelson breweries include Backroads Brewing Company, Torchlight Brewing and Nelson Brewing Companybut the complete list of participating breweries can be found on cbcbfilmcompetition.civictheatre.caand on Facebook at Craft Brews of the Columbia Basin Film Competition.

Following the festive Civic Theatre festival the films will tour the Columbia Basin throughout October ( BC Craft Beer Month) , appearing in the communities of the  participating breweries. This is new for 2019 and reflects the regional focus of the Civic Theatre’s screen-based industry group.  Aside from the top three prizes the audience in each community will vote to bestow the people’s choice ‘Growler’ award.

By the end of the tour the filmmaker receiving the most Growlers will be awarded the ‘Golden Growler’ Audience Choice award and an additional $1,500 cash prize.

Filmmakers should sign-up by September 16th on Film Freeway.  Completed projects can be submitted until October 1st.
