The Columbia Basin Culture Tour is back showcasing talent in the Nelson, Harrop, Procter, Balfour, Crawford Bay and Gray Creek areas August 13-14.

The tour runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.

The Columbia Basin Culture Tour allows you to explore artists’ studios, museums, art galleries and heritage sites during this free, self-guided event. Travel to studios and archives that aren’t normally open, see demonstrations, new exhibitions and collections or meet people behind the scenes.

To participate in the tour, check out the Culture Tour Directory.

Some of the highights include, Slip Bucket Designs in Beasley; Nelson painter Carol Reynolds, whose paintings will be displayed throughout her house and yard, with a “Bargain Deck” with a selection of work at low prices; and Selkirk College – Kootenay Studio Arts (KSA) Victoria Street campus, it’s where the magic of hands-on studio arts education happens.

There’s Touchstones Nelson: Museum of Art and History is a combination of art gallery, museum and archives, with a shop featuring locally handcrafted work; four different artisans in Harrop/Proctor as well as the Balfour & District Business & Historical Association is giving short tours of the 1947 MV Anscomb Ferry Wheelhouse.

Across Kootenay Lake on the Osprey Ferry, there’s time to visit Circle of Friends Artisan Shoppe that is located in a meadow with an incredible view of Kootenay Lake, they offer a wide variety of artistic works by local artisans.

Saturday August 13th Music in the Meadow will be held in conjunction with the Columbia Basin Cultural Tour. Artisans of Crawford Bay pursue the ancient craft of making everyday objects with artistry. Here you will find a main street of ancient skills resurrected before your eyes.

In Gray Creek Store and meet Tom Lymbery who will be available to sign copies of his two books: Tom’s Gray Creek – a Kootenay Lake Memoir – Part 1 and Tom’s Gray Creek – Part 2.

His books are part of BC history from 1911 to 1980 covering the fruit growing era, transportation from sternwheelers to highways, operating a 103-year-old family-owned and -operated general store. Tom will also show the eight-foot steering wheel from the SS Nasookin.
