Matthew Berg of the CHEK ABC DL School in Nelson came away with the Primary prize in the recent National Forest Week/FORED BC Society contest.

The theme this year was Sunrise in the Forest, to highlight the new diverse innovative opportunities arising in Canada’s forest industry, including the emergence of high-tech careers and continuing sustainably responsible stewardship of this vital renewable resource.

Hundreds of entries were received from youths K-12, all across British Columbia as part of FORED’s Youth Engaging Sustainability (YES) program.

“After jumping around and doing his happy dance he exclaimed “I never win anything”,’ said Matthew’s mother Heidi when asked for Matthew’s reaction to winning the prize.

“Next he asked “When do I get my $50 prize?” He’s been checking the mail everyday since.”

Along with Matthew’s primary win, Ajanjot, Khalsa School, Old Yale Road Campus, Surrey was the Intermediate Winner while Shaylene, McNaughton Centre Alternate School in Quesnel too the Secondary prize.

“Each year, this youth artwork clearly demonstrates how much children understand and value our forest resources,” said said Education Director, Victor Godin.

“They recognize forests give us clean air, provide habitat for animals and valuable wood products we use every day.”

CHEKABC is a Christian DL school that is fully accredited to work with students in Grades K-12. It serves families all over British Columbia who choose to teach their children at home and offers a variety of learning options for students.

The CHEKABC head office is located in Nelson, BC; however, Matthew lives in Victoria, BC and works with the local CHEKABC teacher and community group that serves families on Vancouver Island.
