Author Vanessa Farnsworth returns to the Nelson Library

Vanessa Farnsworth’s new collection of short stories will resonate with anyone who has ever found themselves teetering on the edge. Farnsworth reads from The Things She’ll be Leaving Behind on Thursday, May 16, 7 p.m. at the Nelson Public Library.
Described as stories of women trying to get their footings, preserve their sanity, and survive in circumstances they never expected and featuring burnt-at-the-edges dialogue and contemporary humour, Farnsworth’s book was published in 2018 by Thistledown Press.
Reviewer Ben Charles (SaskBooks) says that the collection is “a riveting adventure of both the zany and the ordinary shown through the lens of interesting and realistic female protagonists.” The Quill & Quire wrote that the stories “remind us that the purpose of fiction is not always to entertain but occasionally to confound expectations, provoke discomfort, or probe the various folds of the unknown.”
Farnsworth is a science journalist, former horticulturist, and long-time resident of the BC Interior. She is the author of the memoir Rain on a Distant Roof: A Personal Journey Through Lyme Disease in Canada (Signature Editions, 2013), which she presented to a packed house at the Nelson Library that year. Her short fiction has been published in literary journals in Canada and the United States.
Farnsworth appears with financial assistance from the Canada Council for the Arts through the Writers Union of Canada.
